Course Description

Effects that the operation of civil aircraft have on the environment are considered and means of reducing these effects are considered. The generation of noise, local air pollution, the effect of engine emissions during cruise and the effect of contrails are discussed in detail. Potential changes in the design of aircraft and engines and in the way in which they are operated in order to reduce environmental effects are considered. Attention is given to the difficulties encountered in trying to balance conflicting environmental demands in arriving at solutions. While the course concentrates on the environmental effects of civil aviation, the material covered should provide a good basis for dealing with other complex environmental problems that arise in engineering. Three term-hours; Winter term. P.H. Oosthuizen.
