The Structural and Multidisciplinary Systems Design Lab (SMSD) at Queen’s University is a leading research organization that specializes in advanced modeling (FEM) and multi-disciplinary design and optimization. This state-of-the-art research body has extensive experience in developing and publishing novel academic research for automotive, aerospace, energy, and defence driven applications, utilizing analytical and computational optimization techniques to develop new principles and methodologies to solve practical problems with various industrial partners. Dr. Il Yong Kim’s SMSD group is currently seeking talented students to apply for MASc, PhD, and Postdoc positions who are interested in contributing to advanced research programs.

 Research areas include:

  • Automotive design (including hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles); Aerospace design (system-level and part-level design)
  • Advanced modeling, analysis, multi-physics, multi-disciplinary design and optimization (including aerospace and automotive lightweight design).
  • Advanced manufacturing, including additive manufacturing (3D printing) and metal forming processes.
  • Accurate fatigue analysis; Multi-physics neural network modeling; Machine learning; Prognostics and health monitoring.
  • Composite modeling; Lightweight design and manufacturing using composites, especially CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics).

Industry Partners in 4 industries (aerospace, automotive, defense, energy) including:

  • General Motors (GM Oshawa, Canada, and GM Michigan, USA)
  • Magna
  • General Dynamics Canada
  • Bombardier Aerospace
  • Pratt & Whiney Canada
  • Safran Landing (Messier-Dowty)
  • Bombardier Transportation
  • RMC and Department of National Defence
  • The Power Collective (wind energy)
  • Life Prediction Technologies Inc.

While working with the Structural and Multidisciplinary Design Group, graduate students gain experience using industry standard computer-aided design tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, LS-dyna, HyperWorks (including HyperMesh and OptiStruct), Genesis, Solid Edge, Solid Works, NX, MSC/ADAMS, and MATLAB. Graduate students are given exceptional training in the fields of FEA and optimization by industry experts, including training opportunities and on-site internships (6 – 12 months) with industry clients in aerospace, automotive, defense, and energy sectors.

If you are interested in applying for a graduate research position with the Structural and Multidisciplinary Systems Design Lab, please send a CV and (unofficial) academic transcripts to Dr. Il Yong Kim (kimiy@queensu.ca).
